The ownership of the woodland has been traced back to 966AD. The woodland has two parts, the original ancient part known as Bluebell Wood covering 13 acres (5.4 ha) a map of 1661 exists, surrounded by younger woodland on three sides covering 68 acres (27.5 ha). A Bronze Aged dagger was discovered on Tunnel Hill when the railway tunnel was constructed between 1833 and 1838.
